Art Nouveau, the Graphic Designer’s Muse

Graphic illustrators near the end of the 19th century were concerned with shape, design and pattern. The man whose influence changed the way modern graphic designers look at a page and who introduced those elements was merely 26 years old when he passed away. In his short life span, he created his proprietary understanding of the art nouveau style, that artists have imitated in varying degrees all throughout the 1900′s. Oscar Wilde played a major role in the propagation of the Art Nouveau style, despite being a controversial personality and more directly associated with literature over art. He believed that art should not be limited by ethical or moral concerns. Oscar Wilde decided to choose this special young artist to illustrate a certain story which was both perverse and exotic. This youthful illustrator employed dark eroticism, beautiful seeping lines, and patterns with intelligent distortions to decorate this story.

This work was further distinguished by interconnection between white and black. The delicate patterns created on a white background are strongly contrasted with the large borders and other areas of darkness. The background surface is typically uneven and motion is provided by long, uninterrupted bending lines. Oscar places figures in his renderings constructed of simple outlines. However, the figure’s hairdos are intricate and elaborate. The items the figures hold are complex as well. The power of his work is perfected by the inter-relationship between the complex and the simple.

A lot of designers toward the end of the 19th century received inspiration from the imports that were being brought from Japan, as well as renewing their interest in early Renaissance decorations and medieval arts. Appearing in many famous publications, the young illustrator’s artwork and illustrations were  a strong influence in both the United States and Europe. Many of his pieces have been reproduced as prints and posters to be hung on the wall. This site teaches you about top graphic design outsourcing.

Poster art evolved during the 19th century; it was first simply used as commercial advertising, and then changed into a completely different art form. Posters were produced in color, unlike the black and white books of the time. The leader in poster design used one sizable, bright, colorful, image to draw in the viewer. If this image was advertising an event or a product, the accompanying text was usually very simple and quick. The man heading up poster design capitalized on his awareness that capturing your viewer’s attention hinges upon simplicity and clarity. To that end, his colors were vivid and bright and his shapes were flat and uncomplicated. Much like an Impressionist painting, his lines would be somewhat fractured and hesitant. Tbis artist’s work is therefore widely known as the precursor to the true art nouveau poster aesthetic.

Another artist known for bolder lines and more flowing curves is considered as the father of the prototypical art nouveau poster. These posters typically feature youthful, flowing, slender girls with cascading hair. Their hair continues off their bodies and shifts into capricious shapes. There was also a successful and famous art nouveau whose elegant posters featured rather narrow strips as well as a full length female figure. Many distinctive art forms can be seen in these designs which borrow elements from Arab and Moorish decoration, Hebrew calligraphy, the mosaics of the Byzantine as well as Celtic motifs and wood cuts from Japan.

There are countless books which reproduce these artworks from the late 1800s, and detail more about how each artist approached their work. Poster art of the 19th century and early 20th century are among the specialties dealers sell. You can often find them selling their wares at antique shows. These original pieces, in good condition, have been known to sell for thousands of dollars.
